Several Remarks on Dissimilarities and Ultrametrics
We investigate the relationships between tolerance relations, equivalence relations, and ultrametrics. The set of spheres associated to an ultrametric space has a tree structure that reflects a hierarchy on the set of equivalences associated to that space. We show that every ultrametric defined on a finite space is a linear combination of binary ultrametric and we introduce the notion of ultram...
متن کاملFrom hypertrees to arboreal quasi-ultrametrics
Some classical models of clustering (hierarchies, pyramids, . . . ) are related to interval hypergraphs. In this paper we study clustering models related to hypertrees which are an extension of interval hypergraphs. We first prove that a hypertree can be characterized by an order on its vertices, this order allowing to find one of its underlying vertex trees. We then focus on clustering models ...
متن کاملQuasi - Greedy Triangulations Approximating
This paper settles the following two longstanding open problems: 1. What is the worst-case approximation ratio between the greedy and the minimum weight triangulation? 2. Is there a polynomial time algorithm that always produces a triangulation whose length is within a constant factor from the minimum? The answer to the rst question is that the known (p n) lower bound is tight. The second quest...
متن کاملSubdominant matroid ultrametrics
Given a matroid M on the ground set E, the Bergman fan B̃(M), or space of M -ultrametrics, is a polyhedral complex in RE which arises in several different areas, such as tropical algebraic geometry, dynamical systems, and phylogenetics. Motivated by the phylogenetic situation, we study the following problem: Given a point ω in RE , we wish to find an M -ultrametric which is closest to it in the ...
متن کاملPlanar Ultrametrics for Image Segmentation
We study the problem of hierarchical clustering on planar graphs. We formulate this in terms of finding the closest ultrametric to a specified set of distances and solve it using an LP relaxation that leverages minimum cost perfect matching as a subroutine to efficiently explore the space of planar partitions. We apply our algorithm to the problem of hierarchical image segmentation.
